Clinical Trial Shows Athletic Advantage For ASEA Athletes

Study finds that after drinking ASEA for one week, athletes experienced shift in 43 metabolites

Salt Lake City, Utah — ASEA, LLC announces the release of groundbreaking findings at the Experimental Biology 2012 Conference in San Diego of a new study from the Human Performance Laboratory showing increased power output and endurance among competitive athletes.*

Nieman, DrPH, FACSM at the Human Performance Laboratory, Appalachian State University, found that after drinking ASEA athletes experienced massive free-fatty acid mobilization in the blood PRIOR to exercise to a level normally found only after heavy exercise.

“These are very significant findings,” said Nieman. “Our research demonstrated that ASEA is causing mobilization of free-fatty acids PRIOR to exercise, making this source of fuel available at the outset of exercise or competitive performance. This has important implications, especially regarding glycogen sparing, which is something every athlete tries to achieve.”
Glycogen sparing is the use of non-carbohydrates as a source of energy during exercise so that the depletion of muscle glycogen is delayed. When glycogen is spared the body burns fats for energy, making a greater contribution to an athlete’s efforts during the initial stages of a race. This leaves more glycogen for the later stages of racing or exercise, and muscle fatigue will be delayed.

The research found that after drinking ASEA for one week, athletes were experiencing a shift in 43 metabolites.

“We have rarely seen such a drastic difference. For 43 of those signals to change, that is a quarter of the metabolite profile that we are monitoring. It is a huge bump in metabolite shifts that are due to the ingestion of just one product,” said Nieman.

What do these metabolite shifts mean for athletes?

“Athletes actually started the exercise after drinking ASEA with a lot more of these free-fatty acids in their blood. The reason that is important is that the muscles will actually use that as fuel, sparing the muscle glycogen and the use of amino acids which is what we found as we analyzed the data,” said Nieman.

“Every understanding from the literature is that these probably came from the fat stores in the abdominal area,” said Nieman. “So if you drink ASEA we found that the fats go up in the blood. If you’re not exercising, those fats will still be used to support the body’s metabolism for life.”

Simply drinking ASEA for seven days mobilized fuel stores in the body from abdominal fat. For those that want to burn more fat during exercise ASEA is ideal. Even without exercise the freed up fat stores will be used by the body as fuel.

Although this is the first laboratory study of ASEA on athletes, many endurance athletes have been drinking ASEA and noticing improvements in their race times, recovery after racing/training, etc.

Learning about the research behind ASEA boosts my confidence and reinforces what I already know.” Typically, muscle glycogen is reduced in the body during a single or many groups of energy expenditures. For example, during a single sprint muscle glycogen may deplete by 25% to 30% of the resting levels. Similarly, at the end of longer durations (60 to 90 minutes) of high, moderate and low exercise muscle, glycogen will be dramatically reduced or depleted.

The study included 20 fit athletes in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-based, cross-over study. After baseline testing for VO2Max and body composition, one-half of the athletes drank four ounces of ASEA each day for seven days. The other one-half of the athletes drank four ounces of a placebo for seven days. Then all athletes completed a 75-km cycling trial, with blood drawn prior to the trial, immediately after the trial and one hour after the trial.

After a “washout” period in which none of the athletes drank ASEA or the placebo, a seven day cross-over study was conducted. The original ASEA group drank the placebo and the original placebo group drank ASEA for a seven day period. Then all athletes completed a second 75-km cycling trial, with blood drawn prior to the trial, immediately after the trial and one hour after the trial.

The research demonstrated that drinking ASEA taps into the body’s largest energy reserves, freeing fatty acids from adipose tissue, BEFORE exercise or athletic competition.

“This unexpected mobilization of fatty acids in theory will lead to better endurance in athletes, assisting athletes to maintain a certain pace for longer periods of time,” said Nieman.

The research found that the release of fatty acids is coming from fatty adipose tissue, the body’s source of abundant, available energy. Adipose tissue is fat stored around the organs of the body, with the most common and largest fat store being the abdominal area. Adipose tissue triglycerides represent the largest energy reserve in the human body. Utilizing these stores is critical for prolonged endurance exercise.

The study also demonstrated that the athletes in the study experienced a massive increase in blood levels of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) after exercise. This could indicate less oxidative stress on muscles. Further research is being conducted to determine the implications of this increase.

“This study is the latest in ASEA’s commitment to ongoing research. The frontiers of redox signaling molecules and ASEA are constantly being pushed. This latest study is not a destination, but an on-ramp,” said Verdis Norton, Chief Executive Officer at ASEA.

New Sports Findings: ASEA Increases Athletic Endurance, Ventilatory Threshold and VO2 Max

ASEA, LLC announces new groundbreaking findings of a study showing increased power output and endurance among competitive athletes.

Dr. Gary L. Samuelson, Ph.D., a leading Redox Signaling scientist, conducted a clinical trial exploring ASEA’s effects on athletic endurance. Dr. Samuelson tested athletic endurance, time to ventilatory threshold and the VO2 max rate of 17 competitive athletes over a period of weeks. The athletes drank ASEA daily and their levels were closely monitored.

The group averaged a 12 percent increase in their time to ventilatory threshold, meaning they were able to expend energy and effort 12 percent longer before they hit the runner’s wall.

Athletic Reviews: Increased Performance, Endurance & Recovery

ASEA has been reviewed by Road Bike Action Magazine, which conducted a three-month trial of the product.

James Lawrence, Ironman athlete, attributes ASEA to helping him break the world record of completing the highest number of Half Ironman Triathalons (Ironman 70.3s) in one year. An Ironman 70.3 consists of a 1.2-mile swim, followed by a 56-mile bike ride, followed by a 13.1-mile run. To complete 20 of these in one year, Lawrence would need to finish an Ironman 70.3 every two weeks.

**** The VO2 max rate, also known as maximal oxygen consumption, is a measurement of the amount of oxygen the body uses during exercise. VO2max Testing: What it is and Why an Athlete Should Know.

VO2max, or maximal oxygen uptake, is one factor that can determine an athlete’s capacity to perform sustained exercise and is linked to aerobic endurance. VO2 max refers to the maximum amount of oxygen that an individual can utilize during intense or maximal exercise. It is measured as “milliliters of oxygen used in one minute per kilogram of body weight.”

This measurement is generally considered the best indicator of an athlete’s cardiovascular fitness and aerobic endurance. Theoretically, the more oxygen you can use during high level exercise, the more ATP (energy) you can produce. This is often the case with elite endurance athletes who typically have very high VO2 max values.

As an athlete increases his or her exercise intensity oxygen consumption rises.  This continues to a specific point where it plateaus.  This plateau is the VO2 Max and is a point where it becomes painful for the athlete to continue and isn’t long before muscle fatigue forces the individual to stop.

This test has become a valuable indicator of how far a person can push him or herself before the body says, “No more!”

Research has shown that athletes, through intense and lengthy training can increase their VO2 max, however elite athletes find it difficult to gain more than a 1 or 2 percent increase through this type of training due to the fact that they are already in peak condition.  At this point genetics may play a greater role in determining who crosses the finish line first or second.  Athletes have even resorted to using performance enhancing drugs to gain that edge, but such methods result in only minimal gains still of 2 to 4 percent.

It was this test that shined a bright light on ASEA™, which did a pilot study with 17 athletes to determine the effect of supplementation with ASEA™ on athletic performance.  The test results were beyond anyone’s wildest imagination. The study’s concluded that ingestion of the test supplement, ASEA™, for 7-10 days prior to and immediately before a VO2max test, was shown to significantly increase the time it took for participants to reach VO2max under equivalent carefully regulated power ramp-up conditions. Redox Signaling Powers Up Aerobic Performance

As the energy requirements of the cells and tissues increase during aerobic activity, oxygen and sugars in the blood must be able to be transferred from the lungs and energy stores into the muscle cells and tissues. Waste products like CO2 and excess lactates must be transferred out of the cells and tissues and back into the blood and out of the body. The efficiency at which the cells can move oxgen fuel and waste products back and forth through the blood and cellular membranes determines how long the body can sustain aerobic activity.

My name is Sinjin Smith I am a Beach Volleyball World Champion and Olympian and commentator now. I run camps and clinics for kids up and down the California coast and all over the country. I really have not been able to get away from the sport of beach volleyball.

Beach volleyball you know is a very difficult sport. You are out here trying to move around in the sand, which is not very forgiving. Well it is to some degree because if you fall your not going to get hurt but trying to go anywhere is very difficult trying to jump is very difficult. You are covering a large course, a course that six people would cover indoors. The sport of beach volleyball can be a very very difficult sport.

I have been searching my whole career, 25 years, for a product that would help me perform. So I said ok, if I feel that good I am going to push myself even harder and see how things go. I ran a few more sets and I come down and normally my legs are shaking and they weren’t shaking. I thought well that’s odd, I will just wait until tomorrow because the next day I can barely walk, normally when I do that kind of a workout.

The next day I felt pretty good. I wasn’t limping around when I walked, I was feeling pretty darn good. That’s when I knew this product is very special. The claims they have been making and the tests they have doing were real!

Last week I posted some information about a well known athlete in the collegiate ranks that was having a phenomenal year leading his team, conference, and the nation in several statistical categories.   I had heard from a credible source that this athlete was using ASEA.  I thought that was pretty cool and wondered how it was working.

What followed was very surprising and I have to admit a little humorous at first.  ASEA’s offices in Salt Lake City started receiving phone calls from fans upset and worried that the information printed in this blog might somehow have negative consequences for the athlete, his team, and the institution!  At first I thought that was a bit of an overreaction, but then as I thought about it I realized in the crazy world we live in today, where common sense isn’t very common, there is a possibility someone somewhere could pick this up and try to make a big deal out of it.  With the environment surrounding the sports world especially when it comes to any kind of dietary supplementation I thought it best to remove the post.

The last thing I want to be is a catalyst for unnecessary and unwarranted harassment for the athlete, team, or institution.  Not that I’m worried anything would come of it because I know, as does ASEA and every ASEA user, that ASEA does not contain any banned substance, it is not a drug, and the ingredients are distilled water and sodium chloride…not exactly conspiracy worthy material.

So forget I ever mentioned that a top collegiate athlete might be drinking ASEA and improving his/her performance by doing so.

But what if such an athlete is drinking the stuff and why would he/she?

For the same reason any athlete would use an allowable supplement under the rules of his or her sport; to gain an edge.

ASEA has shown consistently in testing and independent studies to improve the ventricular threshold or “runner’s wall” by an average of 12%. ASEA Athlete ~ Jonathan Hollar


My name is Jonathan Hollar. I am from Orlando Florida. I am an endurance Athlete.

An Olympic Duathalon is usually 6.2 mile run, a 25 mile bike ride and 3.1 mile run. I before was doing that in around two hours and forty minutes, now with ASEA I have done that in 2:08.

I am able now to bike faster than ever. I have made up 10-15 minutes on the bike. If I am going to run I am now down to 5:35 pace in the miles. It is just unbelievable.

My last experience in triathlon last season I did 8-10 triathlons over the whole season. That is all I have ever done in my whole life. 92 to 93% of my max heart rate is all I had in me in a triathlon. Now I am noticing in training I am coming home my heart rate monitor is telling me that 101% was reached, 106% sometimes!

In a race now I bring my heart rate up to 98% and I hold it the hold race. I can hold that for 3-4 hours now.

A few weeks into taking ASEA I noticed that I would do a workout and usually I would be done. Now I am doing workout and I am getting back my legs at 10pm and doing a workout instead of going to sleep.

I am actually recovering a lot faster. I am working out two maybe even three times a day, six days a week. My Performance is through the roof. I am able to train harder, longer and faster because of ASEA.

International Olympic Committee Surprise; Food Supplements can Enhance Athletic Performance.

Food supplements can boost athletic performance, according to new advice from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) that marks an about face from earlier positions.

The Swiss organisation said, “a very small number may enhance performance for some athletes” but did not go into specifics about what those supplements might be. Earlier advice from the IOC had warned athletes off food supplements as groups like the US Anti-Doping Agency do.

It said supplements must be, “used in accordance with current evidence under the guidance of a well-informed professional.”

“Athletes contemplating the use of supplements and sports foods should consider their efficacy, their cost, the risk to health and performance, and the potential for a positive doping test. Supplement use in young athletes should be discouraged, and the focus should be on consuming a nutrient-rich, well-chosen diet to allow for growth while maintaining a healthy body composition.”

The Olympic body added that supplementation does not compensate for, “poor food choices and an inadequate diet”.

“…but supplements that provide essential nutrients may be a short-term option when food intake or food choices are restricted due to travel or other factors.”

ASEA is putting its product through rigorous testing and research to prove it has a tremendous impact on performance for athletes. Studies to date show the redox signaling molecules in ASEA are able power up aerobic performance.

As the energy requirements of the cells and tissues increase during aerobic activity, oxygen and sugars in the blood must be able to be transferred from the lungs and energy stores into the muscle cells and tissues. Waste products like CO2 and excess lactates must be transferred out of the cells and tissues and back into the blood and out of the body. The efficiency at which the cells can move oxgen fuel and waste products back and forth through the blood and cellular membranes determines how long the body can sustain aerobic activity. When the oxygen and energy demands of the muscle tissues exceed the ability of the body to maintain adequate delivery, the muscle cells and tissues start to burn internal energy stores anaerobically (without the use of oxygen), waste products (CO2 and lactates) start to build up and further interfere with the aerobic processes. When the internal energy stores of the muscle cells are exhausted, no more energy can be provided and muscle activity ceases completely.

Increasing the amount of balanced redox signaling molecules in the body helps normalize the redox potential in and around the cells and tissues. A balanced redox potential in the tissues increases the efficiency at which oxygen, fuels and wastes can be transferred in and out of cells and tissues, making the natural aerobic processes more efficient. If aerobic capacities are increased, then the natural length of time that aerobic activity can be sustained under high energy demands is also increased. The time that it takes to recover normal aerobic balance after an intense anaerobic effort is also shortened.

Triathlete Cindy Lampee on Asea

I am Cindy Lampee and I am a stay at home mom. I have been a runner for about eighteen years. Just recently I got into triathlons after running four marathons in just under two years.

After four weeks of being on ASEA I ran a 10k and I had a personal record and I had a negative split. Which means that I ran the second half faster than the first half. Which was something I had been trying to achieve for two years and had been unable to accomplish.

The next race was two weeks later and it was a 10 mile race. I also set a personal record and I knocked 14 minutes off a previous 10 mile race that I had just run 3 months earlier.

I run with a group and I have noticed that during my runs after two or three miles of warming up that I am getting faster and I feel stronger and I end up running ahead of the group and I finish before the group.

My recovery time is quicker. Recovery, for a busy mom is very important because I can’t rest after a long run. I have children to take care of and I have to keep going. As an athlete it is important because you have your runs and your trainings the next day, your bike rides are slim. It just makes you stronger for the next workout.

I can not imagine training without ASEA. I take it before every training run and before every race I have ASEA with me and I will drink 4 to 6 ounces about 20 minutes before the race.

I will never run without ASEA again!
